I honestly don't have too much to say about this book. It has its good and bad parts, like every other book. This is classified as: YA Fiction, Sci-Fi, and Romance
Synopsis: "No one knows why Juliette's touch is fatal, but The Reestablishment has plans for her. Plans to use her as a weapon. But Juliette has plans of her own. After a lifetime without freedom, she's finally discovering a strength to fight back for the very first time-- and to find a future with the one boy she thought she'd lost forever." -the blurb on the inside of Shatter Me
Firstly, I really enjoyed the writing style. It's stilted and fragmented, which is representative of Juliette's mind. There are half sentences, repeated words, crossed-out lines, and it all adds to the ambience of this book. I loved Juliette and Kenji. Juliette seems weak, but she isn't, and most of all, she's good. Most of the time, characters like her have a streak of violence or some other type of manifestation due to their tortured past. But not her. She's capable of violence, but only when it's necessary. And Kenji. I know he wasn't there for the most part, but he's clearly the side comic relief. I enjoyed all the scenes he was in. Most of all, Shatter Me was weirdly addicting. I can't pinpoint the reason why, but it was an absolute page-turner.
That was everything I liked about this book, so now let's move onto everything I didn't like. After reading the entire book, I realized how simple it was. Everything was too easy. It lacks a certain level of depth and complexity that I look for in my books, and I would call this a light read. Next, Adam. He was too nice, too caring, too accepting. He was too perfect. Because of this, his character feels bland and one-dimensional. Adam and Juliette fell in love way too easily. It was very much insta-love, and I didn't really feel any spark there. Lastly, I feel like nothing of importance actually occurred in this book. Other than Adam and Juliette falling in love, nothing interesting really happened. And everything that did happen was something that I expected. The plot was something that I've seen in many many books before, and it was all predictable.
I give this 3/5 stars. It was good and unexpectedly addicting, but it was very simple and straightforward, which is not what I like to see in books.
